Volvo XC90 Safety

Official figures prove the Volvo XC90 is a genuine life-saver

Volvo’s safety ambitions expressed in the Volvo Vision 2020 that ‘no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by 2020’ are well on the way to being realised, and the superb safety record of the Volvo XC90 is a significant factor in achieving this target. Volvo XC90 safety has been proved by recent official figures that show that no Volvo XC90 driver or passenger deaths have been reported in UK car-to-car crashes – a real life-saver indeed.

The excellent Volvo XC90 safety record is all the more remarkable bearing in mind that 70,000 Volvo XC90s have been sold in the UK since it was launched in 2002 and that these government figures go back as far as 2004. Volvo also carries out its own research into real-world crashes to improve the safety of all Volvos and Volvo’s findings support the government data on Volvo XC90 safety.

So what is it that makes the Volvo XC90 so safe, even on today’s crowded roads? Volvo has been a pioneer in the fitment of safety systems to its cars and all Volvos have benefited from key safety technologies. Systems such as automatic emergency braking, for example, have been fitted as standard across the Volvo model range since 2014. Insurance companies are, of course, keen to benefit from the fitment of advanced safety systems and Matthew Avery, Director of Research at Thatcham, the motor insurers’ research centre, was effusive in his praise of Volvo safety features “The extraordinary safety record of the Volvo XC90 in the UK is built on class-leading passive safety. In Euro NCAP impact testing, unrivalled protection was given to occupants of the car. Volvo has long been a pioneer in active safety, too, offering standard-fit safety technologies which help drivers to avoid crashes completely. This not only protects occupants, but also those outside of the car.” In fact, so good was the XC90’s safety performance in crash tests that Euro NCAP named it as the best overall performer of the year in 2015.
