Wide, low and bold, the Hyundai Kona looks sleek and streamlined, thanks to contrasting cladding around the wheel arches and sills, and it’s a look that’s enhanced by the practical roof bars on the SE upwards. But the Kona is also true to the Hyundai design identity, with its mesh-pattern cascading grille expressing its dynamic character. Unique to the Kona are the cladding-mounted LED headlights on the Premium GT with the LED daytime running lights set above them to create a twin-headlamp look. Everything about the Hyundai Kona emphasises its muscular sensuality, its refined character and its progressive appeal.
The interior of the Hyundai Kona underscores this SUV’s rugged character and its outstanding technology. The instrument panel features contoured surfaces, whilst painted areas are available in your choice of Red, Lime and Orange, set off by the black roof. Your passengers have personal storage space in trays and there’s room for a 1.5-litre water bottle in the door-pocket holders. Leg room is generous with 1,054mm in the front and 880mm in the rear, whilst you can carry up to 361 litres of luggage or up to 1,143 litres with the 60:40 rear seats folded flat. Equipment available includes an 8” floating touch screen for all your infotainment, a heated steering wheel for those icy mornings and push-button ignition with a smart key. A head-up display is also available to show all the information you need from navigation instructions and speed, to vital data from your Kona’s active safety systems.
Safety starts with how your car is made and the Hyundai Kona features a high-strength-steel bodyshell for rigidity, and an extended body safety zone, together with the use of hot stamping and adhesives for stiffness – an excellent combination to enhance the Kona’s superb passive safety performance.
Active safety systems fitted as standard include:
SUV to its core, the Hyundai Kona may be low to look at, but it enjoys a ground clearance of 170mm and a raised seating position for excellent all-round visibility. The rear suspension in the two-wheel drive version features a coupled torsion beam axle with a high-stiffness torsion beam, which contributes to the Kona’s sporty handling and comfortable ride. The Premium GT features the four-wheel-drive system, which can send up to 50% of torque to the rear wheels to get you through those tougher road conditions.
Two petrol engines are currently available, the 120PS 1.0 T-GDI and the 177PS 1.6 T-GDI, capable of 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds. From mid-2018, the Kona will be offered with Hyundai’s new generation of 1.6-litre diesel engines, which will be available with the 6-speed manual transmission. Alternatively, you can choose the direct-responding, 7-speed, dual clutch transmission, which prevents any interruption in the torque during gear shifts. The DCT also provides two driving modes, so you can choose whether you want Normal or Sport mode. In Sport mode, the shift pattern changes, so each gear is held for longer before shifting up. With 54.3mpg available on the Kona S and CO2 emissions as low as 117g/km, the Kona is efficient and economical too.

A DAB radio and Bluetooth are standard across the Kona range. Three infotainment systems are available: there’s the standard audio system with a 5” monochrome TFT screen, DAB radio, Bluetooth, Aux-in and USB; the Display audio system with 7” colour LCD touch screen, rear-view camera, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android – smartphone connectivity means you can use the navigation apps on your phone; and the 8” navigation system, which again comes with rear-view camera, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android, as well as 3D maps, a seven-year subscription to LIVE services and Lifetime Mapcare. For exceptional sound quality, the Krell system, available from the Kona Premium upwards, comes with eight speakers, including a 200mm sub-woofer, which delivers a stunning 45 watts per channel.
You can choose from eight exterior finishes and Hyundai offers a choice on the Kona of neutral colours and vivid colours. The neutral colour choice comprises: Chalk White, Lake Silver, Dark Knight, Velvet Dune and Phantom Black, whilst the vivid colour range offers Pulse Red, Tangerine Comet, Acid Yellow and Blue Lagoon.
